Taranaki’s best converged on Manukorihi Intermediate yesterday to exercise their brains and test their brain power.
The 77 students from Hawera, Devon and Manukorihi Inermediates were taking part in Opti-minds, a creative problem-solving competition held all over Australasia.
The 11 teams took part in three categories – science and engineering, social science and language and literature, while looking like they were having a ball.
Taranaki organizer, John Niwa, said the competition was about students co-operating creatively and using their different intelligences together.
Devon Intermediate student Phillip Bailey 12, was in group Six and a Half Brains. The group won the science and technology section by creating a mini-shelter and then presenting it to the judges in a very whacky play.
Phillip said he had struggled to keep his feet still while performing.
I was a bit nervous today but I tried to hide it, he said.
He had enjoyed working in a team and meeting other students during the challenge, which was really fun.
An international Opti-minds competition will be held at Manukorihi Intermediate in November.
Results: Spontaneous challenge: Hawera Intermediate Team one.
Science and Engineering: Devon Intermediate – Six and a Half Brains.
Social Science: Manukorihi Intermediate Opti-girls.
Language and literature: Devon Intermediate Sugar Free Mints.
